Week Five: Fair Housing Investigator Course examines legal issues, including:
- Determining reasonable cause. Participants will discuss the reasonable cause standard and explain the ramifications of using an incorrect reasonable cause standard.
- Summarizing how a charge of discrimination relates to an administrative proceeding. Participants will define a charge of discrimination and discuss the importance of the FIR in preparation of a charge.
During the final days of the weeklong course, participants will engage in a mock trial. During this exercise, participants will identify the right of an “aggrieved person” to intervene in the administrative proceeding, describe how the administrative hearing is conducted in a fair housing case, discuss what documents/exhibits are typically brought to the hearing, describe the types of relief that may be granted by an administrative law judge, and describe when an initial decision must be made.
